Remembrance Day Banners

Banners featuring photos of war veterans are featured on light posts in Downtown Greater Napanee each fall leading up to Remembrance Day.

The Downtown Greater Napanee Business Improvement Area and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 137 received a grant from The Town of Greater Napanee to begin this banner project with 33 banners. Each banner displays a photo and name of a veteran. They vary from the First World War to more recent service members.

Sean Beek of Beek Designs created these banners, working with the photos and information that the Legion provided. “The date from which these photos were taken strongly determines output and reproduction quality. By the time these images see the banners, they are easily 5th generation files. This means simply, they have gone from film to paper, scan to a digital file to re-touched digitally and printed again.” Sean worked to crop, stamp and clone various scratches and blurry portions of the photo. Every effort was made to try and improve upon the image and sharpen the final product for print.

A Flags Unlimited representative has reported that Sean did an incredible job. The photos are of excellent quality and will look stunning in our Historic Downtown.

To continue this project in the future and make sure that the banners remain in good repair we are inviting donations to be made.

Call for Volunteers!

Our Branch is always looking for volunteers to help out. Let me give you an idea of some of the things we do here:

Our Entertainment has a band and dance every two weeks and can always use help taking funds at the door and doing a 50/50 draw during the dance.

Our Ways and Means Committee (we meet once a month) plan events and do food for sports events to bring funds into the Branch. We have darts, euchre at our branch weekly and meet at other branches for other sports as well.

Our Youth Ed committee needs judges to look at yearly poems, posters and essays (in Oct/Nov) from local schools and in Feb to listen to students during the Pubic Speaking contests.

In the summer we work a food booth with shifts of 6 or 7 people at the Napanee Fair over the first long weekend in Aug.

We have a Friday lunch at the Branch every week except for the summers and can use volunteers to help cook set up the lunch and serve;

We have a Feb fun curling bonspiel and need volunteers to lead this and assist with scoring.

During Nov we need volunteers to distribute poppies and help out with the brunch after the Nov 11th parade.

New Years eve and New Years Day we need volunteers to help set up food for the crowd at midnight and then on New Years Day we need volunteers to help set up food for our Levee;

We always need help decorating the Club Room for theme dances (Valentines/Halloween and Christmas).

We need ideas for events that will bring people into the Branch.

Giving Back

Recently, we donated a cheque to the Salvation Army with an amount of $724.50 from our weekly Catch the Ace draw.

Thank you to everyone for participating.
